extra credit: buy produce in season.

One sure-fire way to save on your monthly grocery bill while still eating well is to buy produce that’s in season.  So I’ve put together a quick cheat sheet so that you know what produce is in season and therefore likely the least expensive, month by month:

January
Fruit: oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, lemons, papayas
Vegetables:  cabbage, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower

February
Fruit:  oranges, grapefruit, lemons, papayas
Vegetables:  broccoli, cauliflower

March
Fruit:  pineapples, mangoes
Vegetables:  broccoli, lettuce

April
Fruit:  pineapples, mangoes, rhubarb
Vegetables: zucchini, artichokes, asparagus, spring peas, broccoli, lettuce

May
Fruit:  cherries, pineapples, apricots, rhubarb
Vegetables:  zucchini, artichokes, asparagus, spring peas, broccoli, lettuce

June
Fruit:  watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, cherries, blueberries, peaches, apricots
Vegetables:  corn, lettuce

July
Fruit:  watermelon, cantaloupe, blueberries, peaches, apricots, kiwi, raspberries, plums, tomatoes
Vegetables:  cucumbers, squash, corn, green beans, lettuce

August
